Why should I attend this course?
If you are in the electrical industry and you want any sort of credibility in the industry this would be the minimum qualification to have. Secondly, it would allow you to apply for electrical positions advertised in the market place. Thirdly it is one of the requirements for Wireman’s License.

Willl I be given an Examination date on the day that I enrol?
No, you are required to write an ARPL assessment on completion of the course. This is a compulsory evaluation that determines a candidate’s readiness for Trade Test. By successfully passing this test you will receive a serial number which we will use to book the Trade Test final exam. The waiting period for the serial number can range from 3 – 6 weeks.
Is the Examination date given fixed or can it be changed?
Can I schedule my training at any time or just before my Exam?
Yes, you can schedule your training at any time; however it needs to be on one of our scheduled courses. A revision period of 4 days prior to your examination date is provided free of charge.
What will I learn on the Electrical Trade Test course?
The course content will cover all the topics and tasks as prescribed by QCTO. Please read our course description on Electrical Trade Test Preparation
How long is the trade test course?
The course can be done either full time or part time. The full-time course is three weeks long, while the part time course is 6 Weekends long. Please refer to Electrical Trade Test Preparation for more details regarding the schedule.
Will I get meals while attending the course?
Coffee and Tea is served during breaks. Meals are however not provided
There is also a restaurant/cafeteria in the park where one could order meals.
Can I bring my own food to the course?
Must I wear personal protective equipment (PPE)?
Yes, as it is a practical course it is necessary to wear comfortable clothing and appropriate safety footwear. This is not supplied by Renkalec Training Centre as it is personal
Do I have to bring my own tools?
Yes, you have to supply your own basic tools. Please see minimum basic tools to bring along for training.

What percentage is the pass mark for the trade test?
Trade Test Assessment does not work on a percentage but your competence for a task is assessed. There are usually eight categories against which you will be assessed and you have to pass all eight categories to obtain your Trade (Red Seal).
Can I redo the categories which I have failed or do I have to repeat the whole assessment?
You only have to repeat those categories that you have failed, however any of the tasks within the category can be assessed and not necessarily the task that was given the first time. You will receive a new exam date after which Renkalec Training Centre will give you an opportunity to revise these tasks at our practical facility. A fee per day/category will be applicable.
What is the difference between a Trade Test and a Wireman's License?
There is quite a big difference between the two. In short the trade test is a trade qualification, in other words if you have passed a Trade Test you can call yourself an ELECTRICIAN. In the same way that a mechanic that passed a trade test can call himself/herself a MECHANIC. The same apply to a FITTER, MILLWRIGHT etc. A Wireman’s License is a registration that is done at Department of Labour. This registration is subject to certain qualifications, of which Trade Test is one, as described in the Information brochure for application as a registered person.

Renkalec Training Centre is a MERSETA accredited provider for this training and the course will result in you achieving a certificate of competence with your name recorded on the national data base. The courses are offered at our venue or on your site with the required equipment for all the practical work at hand. The course is presented by a facilitator with many years of practical experience throughout South Africa and Africa on PLC systems.
Which manufacturer's equipment is used for the practical?
The courses cover the principles and techniques as specified by IEC 61131 and the practical work makes use of mainly the Siemens PLC’s and equipment

Why should I be attending the Installation Rules course?
Electricians will also acquire the necessary knowledge required to do electrical installation correctly and according to the prescribed standards laid down by the electrical industry.

Is the installation Rules (Paper 1 & Paper 2) the same as a wireman's License?
No, there is quite a big difference between the two. In short the Installation Rules (See Installation Rules course Description) is theoretical Examination assessing your knowledge on the OSHAct and Rules and Regulations governing the Electrical Industry. Is it necessary for me to enrol at the FET college?

What happens if I only pass the exam for one paper?
You have to re-write the paper that you have not passed within a year of the first attempt, if you don’t you have to re-write both papers. If, however you got more than 75% for the paper that you have passed there is no time limit for re-writing the paper that you have failed.

Why do I need a N3 certificate?
You need to have 3 subjects (specific subjects) to be able to register for your Wireman’s License.
